Her characters are always focused on the inner value of things, the inner world. She tells us that their wild and careless approach comes from embracing their full nature and everything that comes with it, the joy, the awkwardness, the monstrosity. There is no time and space, it’s about referring to something in you, about getting back what is lost and experiencing your real energy and structure. - Zeynep 26 yaşında İstanbul’da yaşıyor. İşleri, gözümüzle gördüğümüzlerden öte, içerde olanları araştırıyor. Çizdiği karakterler her zaman iç değerlere odaklanıyor, içerideki dünyaya bakıyor. Yabani ve kaygısız yaklaşımları olması, karakterlerin doğal halleriyle beraber gelen mutluluk, gariplik ve canavarlığı kucaklamaktan ortaya gelir. Zaman ve mekan yoktur, içimizdeki birşeye ima ediyor, kaybedilenleri geri alıp gerçek enerjimizi ve yapımızı yaşamak istiyor. www.zeynepsolakoglu.com

B: Hello Stephanie, can you tell us a bit about your background and how you ended up in Istanbul?

S: Hello! That is a long story!I have always loved arts, this mostly came from spending hours in museums and auctions mostly with my father when I was a kid. After high school, I opted for studying political sciences in a renowned school in Paris, Science-Po, but starting from my second year I also decided to go to another university at the same time to get a degree in Art History, which I did at the Sorbonne. At the time I thought I would become a curator. I went to New York where I was accepted in a Museum Studies Program at NYU and worked as a curatorial intern at the Metropolitan Museum in the 19th century painting department. After that, I came back to France, worked for an old master paintings expert and galerist in Paris for a year and then decided to get a MBA where I specialized in luxury goods marketing. I thought it was a good sector to match a lot of my interests: aesthetics, curiosity, stories and history… and it worked better for me than working in a library most of the time or selling amazing art works to a very limited public. I worked for that industry for more than 10 years, in marketing, media analysis and strategy, first for LVMH in Paris and Hong Kong and then for the Publicis Group as the head of an agency based in Hong Kong. While working for the LVMH headquarters as a head of media analysis I was traveling a lot, and during one of those travels met the man who would later become my husband who happens to be a Turk. After a lot hours spent in planes to meet regularly we decided we should live in the same city, and that is when I moved to Hong Kong. After marrying and having a child we decided to move closer to our families and chose Istanbul amongst other options (Switzerland or France were also on the list). It sounded like one of the best options as Istanbul is a booming place at the moment, good weather, good quality of life. Today we are very happy with this choice.

B: Can you tell us about the ARTAPOT creative process? How did you think of mixing painting with such modern commercial components?

S: Artapot is a collective of artists from France. You can think of it as a rock band type where what matters is what is created as a group more than the individual voice or skills of each member. The collective is formed with two groups: – one is the creative part, and is formed of three to eight creative people all trained in fine arts but who are currently working in other fields such as graphic design or advertising. This group comes up with ideas found in popular culture and turns them into ironic and fun images;- the second group is more like a “craftsmen” group. Its members are very qualified and skilled painters. They are chosen and trained by the first group and they paint the images created by the first group. All images then become oil on canvas paintings, and up to five versions of the same image can be executed. Why do we do this? We think art should not necessarily be for the rich and educated crowd. I and the members of the collective like to think of art as something which resonates with our emotions. We have all been buying pieces of art for a long time and don’t look at them as investments. We just buy things we like and than we find beautiful and/or fun. In a city like Istanbul, sourcing this kind of pieces is difficult and there are not too many options, so we decided to bring affordable and ironic paintings to Turkey.

B: You worked for a while with the LVMH luxury brand group in different positions. If any, what impact did this have on ARTAPOT?

S: The work I did for LVMH and Artapot’s story are not really connected. However I did meet Dominique Carrier, who is the art director -the head of the creative group, while working for a watch brand owned by LVMH. Also, working for a luxury group for so many years, quality is a very important thing to me. Artapot’s paintings, in that respect, are amazing quality works. They are real oil on canvas and we can confidently say their execution is extremely precise and professional.

B: In what ways has Istanbul inspired you?

S: For now our works are mostly inspired by western culture, however we are trying to build on Turkish pop images as well. In our existing works, for instance, we have a tribute to Zagor, who is one of the most popular superheroes in Turkey, as well as another work called SuperTurk who is character we invented. He wears a fez and seems to have triumphed over the complexities of life in Istanbul.

B: Can you please describe your ideal day in Istanbul?

S: I like to walk in front of the Bosphorus in the morning, then sip a coffee, write, read and work. I also love wandering around the streets around Tunel or Cukurcuma in the afternoons, I like the atmosphere there a lot. Being a mother and a business owner, each day can be full of surprises, the best ones are when you are not confronted with Istanbul’s traffic!

The variety of products under her brand is constantly on the increase; T-shirts, pins, earrings and even sofa designs which she is producing at the moment and is very excited about. She has also been working freelance, and is planning to go to New York in September for work, and school. She would like to produce a few works there, and continue working on them when she is back in Istanbul. She says she might even consider moving to India after the trip she had there a few months ago. She can’t stop thinking about it.

Ankara’yla büyüdü. Bu yüzdendir ki ayrı bir aşkı vardır Ankara’ya. Hep çizdi, hep sergi gezdi, her yeri boyadı küçüklükten itibaren. Aklı hep insanlardaydı. Her illüstrasyonunun, her fotoğrafının ilhamını insandan aldı. İnsanları çok sevdi ama bazen de nefret dahi edemeyecek kadar çirkin olduklarını farketti. Belki de insanlar üzerindeki bu gözlemlerinin güzel sonucunu “İfade Özgürlüğü (Freedom of Expression-Poster for Tomorrow)” konulu poster yarışmasında ilk 10a girerek aldı. Grafik Tasarım son sınıfta “People” adı altında Ankara ve İstanbul’daki Galeri Artist’lerde 2 kişisel sergi açtı. Eylül’de New York’a gidecek iş, güç, okul için. Orada üretip yaratmaya devam, döndüğünde İstanbul’dan işlerini yürütmeye devam edecek. Aslında birkaç ay önce yaptığı Hindistan seyahati yüzünden Hindistan’a bile taşınabilir. Aklı hep orada.

Mine grew with animals, in a house with a garden in Istanbul. Her parents were both graphic designers which meant that she always had a connection with illustration. Being half Danish, after high school she spent two years studying in Copenhagen at a college filled with various workshops. She soon however realised that Denmark wasn’t the right place for her and upon returning to Istanbul, began studying Traditional Turkish Arts at Mimar Sinan University, followed by Graphic Design at Marmara University. She’s currently on an erasmus course at ENSAD in Paris. However, Mine tells us that the things she did in between and the journeys she has been on are what she has learned most from. She’s climbed mountains in Anatolia, sometimes living at high altitude, away from people, for up to one or two months. She feels that these trips have contributed most to her imagination and creativity.

Over the years Mine has consistently taken one-off jobs including wall painting, decoration, drawing jobs and menu designs. Most recently working from home, her longing for nature has led her to create, and produce what doesn’t exist. Animals in Fiction was born last year in the spring and is now on sale at Holy Coffee in Çukurcuma. Soon they’ll be available on Bağdat Caddesi, and hopefully soon in Paris. Animals in Fiction only contains illustrations of animals, and each one has a story of its own, depending on what music was in the background at the time and the thoughts running through Mine’s mind. As each one is painted by hand, producing them takes time and Mine currently spends almost every day just painting tshirts. When she has the means, she plans to also do winter editions, bags, jewellery and objects for the home. Ultimately, she wants Animals in Fiction to one day be an activist.

-

İleride de Animals in Fiction’ın kesinlikle aktivist olmasını istiyor.
